Hardcastle hide behind a screen as Kate, dressed as the barmaid, talks with Marlow in her regular voice. Constance employs Hastings to wait on their elopement. Hardcastle discovers Tony and his wife, who thinks he is a highwayman. Tony distracts his mother while Hastings rescues Constance. Hardcastle back although they think they are lost. Hastings and Tony meet in the garden after Tony brings Constance and Mrs. Act 5.2: Hastings and Tony's Plan (05:01) More confusion arises when they continue to set Marlow up with Hardcastle's daughter Kate. Hardcastle believes the missing jewels were the servants' fault. Kate tries to stop him but without success at this time. In disgrace he attempts to leave the house. Marlowe discovers that he really is at the Hardcastle home and not an inn. Act 4: Marlowe and Miss Hardcastle (05:22) Hardcastle merely as the innkeeper, argue over each other's impudence. Hardcastle, thinking Marlowe as his friend's son, and Marlowe, thinking he is at an inn with Mr. In an ironic twist of fate he admits giving the landlady the casket of jewels to keep safe for Hastings. Marlowe confesses his love for the barmaid to Hastings. Her ploy works as Marlow attempts to flirt with her, but her father discovers the two. Miss Hardcastle continues the delusion to win Marlow since he thinks she is a barmaid in her other attire. Act 3: Miss Hardcastle and Marlowe (09:44) Hardcastle discovers the jewels are stolen. In the meantime Constance tries to convince her aunt to give her the jewels. Tony steals Constance's jewels and gives them to Hastings as planned. Hardcastle argues with Kate since she sees Marlow as timid and reserved. "impudence" since he is still unaware of the young men's previous guise. Hardcastle is still perplexed by Marlow's Hastings gets Tony to agree to help Hastings and Constance elope to France so Tony can have Betsy. Hastings and Tony debate Constance's qualities, with Tony saying only negative about his cousin. Hardcastle and Tony then provoke each other's ire with her nagging and his rebelliousness. Hardcastle and Hastings discuss London society with Hastings teasing her along. She vows to help this bashful man to build his confidence. Miss Hardcastle encourages Marlow to continue their conversation despite his stuttering and stammering. Act 2: Miss Hardcastle and Marlow (03:45) Hastings insists on leaving the two alone, and he leaves to join Miss Neville. Miss Hardcastle returns from her walk and meets the reserved Marlow who stumbles in his speech with her. They decide to continue the charade for Marlow's sake. Hardcastle when his beloved, Miss Neville, returns from her walk. Hastings learns the truth about the "inn" and Mr. Hardcastle, thinking his friend's son has arrived, and the young men, thinking they are at an inn, have a series of misunderstandings about their roles, especially concerning supper. Marlow plans on helping Hastings to marry Miss Neville. Act 2: Hastings and Marlow's Arrival (04:32)Īlthough well educated and well bred, Marlow confesses to Hastings his weakness of being embarrassed in front of fine women. Since the Hardcastles never have guests and some of the servants are farmhands, this proves difficult. Hardcastle attempts to teach his servants how to wait on guests at the table. Tony teases them for being lost and then directs them to an inn, which is actually the Hardcastles' old mansion. Losing their way to the Hardcastles', Hastings and Young Marlow come to the alehouse. Tony and other patrons at the alehouse sing up some lively tunes. Miss Neville leaves to walk with her aunt, Mrs. Miss Neville reveals that he is the best friend of Mr. Miss Hardcastle informs Miss Neville about Young Marlow. Young Marlow, the intended, and his father, Sir Charles Marlow, will be dining with the Hardcastles that evening. Hardcastle informs his daughter Kate that he has secured a husband for her. Hardcastle defends her son Tony from her first marriage, whom Mr. Hardcastle discuss their current lifestyle over their past lives. Finally, he invites the audience to partake of the play's comic episodes. Diggory gives the history of comedy, comic playwrights, and types of comedies. ![]()
